ElkemElkem recently announced the successful validation of a proof of concept for an innovative mechanical recycling process for its self-developed high consistency rubbers (HCR). This innovative process opens up a new pathway for circular utilization. Elkem will showcase recycled material samples and mechanical recycling technology at K 2025, the world’s number one trade fair for plastics and rubbers in October 2025 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
The innovation enables the recycling of crosslinked HCR waste and the reintroduction of the recycled material into new formulations. Experiments have shown that recycled materials account for more than 50 percent of new formulations while the final products still deliver excellent mechanical properties. It will build a scalable circular system for high-performance silicone elastomers, offering the market more diverse circular elastomer solutions while significantly reducing both waste and the carbon footprint of production.
Elkem has now established a dual-path recycling system that combines chemical recycling and mechanical recycling. By leveraging this portfolio of technologies, Elkem can deliver tailored recycling solutions for customers based on waste type, carbon footprint targets, and performance requirements.
